What is a Zombie Walk?
Zom-bie [zom-bee]
- -noun
- A corpse re-animated. The walking dead. An undead creature who was once a human, turned by voodoo, biological agents or other means into a mindless, rotting, flesh-eating monster. And it's contagious!
Walk [wawk]
- -verb
- To travel on foot at a moderate pace. Or in the case of zombies, to trudge, stumble, crawl, shuffle or limp.
- -noun
- A period of walking, or a gathering of walkers.
The Beginnings:
A "Flash Mob" is a group of people who gather together in public, perform a random but coordinated act, then disperse, for the simple purpose of watching the reactions of an unsuspecting public. It was from this Flash Mob scene that Zombie Walks, or Zombie Crawls, were born...or revived, as it would be more accurately described!
Lincoln's Walk:
The Lincoln Zombie Walk began as a simple flash-mob event in which participants dressed up as zombies and walked the streets for the enjoyment of bystanders' reactions. It was an underground event, only advertised through MySpace and Facebook, yet our attendance numbers continued to double each season. It is now in its 5th season. Last year we had over 2000 participants, thanks in large part to our partnership with Pershing Center. This partnership has allowed the Lincoln Zombie Walk to become the Lincoln ZombieFest, a city-wide, 2 day festival hosting vendors, a street party, workshops and, of course, the Lincoln Zombie Walk. With your help we will continue to see the Lincoln Zombie Walk grow.
Past Lincoln Zombie Walk participation:
Our 1st event in 2007: 132 Zombies
2008: 278 Zombies
2009: 689 Zombies
2010: Over 2200 Participants!

Imagine being 18, freshly graduated from high school and about to enter the real world….and being completely on your own. No parents to fall back on to give you college advice or assist you in finding an apartment and job. No one there to care and pick you up, or give you a hug after a rough day. This is the reality for many young adults, due to circumstances beyond their control. CEDARS' Bridges program offers hope and help for these young adults.
What is Bridges? CEDARS website shares, "Bridges offers supervised community- based apartment living for youth, ages 16 to 21, who may have been homeless or are coming out of the formal child welfare system and are learning independent living skills. They may live alone or with a roommate, with access to 24-hour staff support. CEDARS staff helps them to continue their education, develop essential life skills, gain and maintain employment, and develop long-lasting support systems."
CEDARS has a long tradition of helping children in our community. Founded in 1947 by the Reverend Charles and Alberta Danner, CEDARS continues their vision today to create a place where children can "experience a real childhood and begin planning for the future." That they also do this with young adults, an often overlooked group, is heartwarming and motivating.
Making a difference in the life of a child is easier than you might think and there are many ways to get involved. CEDARS has a list of items needed to furnish the apartments as well as accepting gift cards and other donations.
Please join with the Lincoln ZombieFest in helping to support this worthwhile organization.
"CEDARS continues to respond, giving hope to youth in need and direction to families struggling to stay together. It is the mission of CEDARS to help children who have been abused, neglected, and homeless achieve safety, stability, and enduring family relationships."
